iPhone 5 and iPad 3 rumors surface

Let’s talk iPhone 5 and iPad 3 rumors.

A source from Japan told Macotakara that Apple is launching a 4-incher iPhone and LCD display for the next iPad, or the long-rumored iPad 3.
A new rumor was posted online by popular Mac blogger from Japan, Macotakara on Saturday about the upcoming Apple devices: The iPad 3 and the iPhone 5. Apparently, the next iteration of the iPhone will include a new design based on Apple’s product cycles history, and it looks like the computer company turned smartphone giant is ready to offer a larger phone.
Unlike previous rumors posted online which mentioned Samsung, Sharp and LG, the Japanese tech blog is reporting that Hitachi and Sony Mobile have begun shipments of the larger 4-inch displays to Apple for unspecified iOS device that will arrive in the market next year. The current iPhone is the iPhone 4S with 3.5-inch screen similar to the older iPhone 4, and the next Apple smartphone may use the “iPhone 5″ brand name.
If this new “iPhone 5″ rumor is true, then it is highly possible that the next iPhone will offer a larger touchscreen size.

Aside from the iPhone 5, the iPad 3 is also reportedly poised to arrive next and similar to the 2012 iPhone, the iPad 3′s screen is rumored to include Hitachi and Sony Mobile liquid crystal displays. The report also added that the two Japanese companies are set to merge their business with Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd. to form the “Japan Display” in Spring of 2012.
The next iPhone will face serious rivals early next year courtesy of Google’s new operating system, the Android Ice Cream Sandwich which includes a more polished user interface and better application support. The upcoming Google Android devices are also expected to offer large screen with better pixel density. The first Android Ice Cream Sandwich device, the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung, includes a 4.65-inch screen with 316 pixels per inch. It is worth mentioning that the iPhone 4S offers 326 ppi in a 3.5-inch screen.

Asus Transformer (2) Prime now listed at Best Buy

The first quad-core Android tablet reportedly arriving in United States next month.

Well it looks like the first quad-core Android tablet is not yet ready to invade the US this month, tips the new listing of retail chain Best Buy.
Best Buy’s Asus Transformer Prime product page appeared online on Black Friday and customers can now pre-order the device. The retail store revealed that the 32GB Transformer Prime is indeed cheaper than its iPad 2 counterpart, only $499.99 which is the minimum advertised price of the 16GB Apple tablet PC variant.
The new Transformer Prime or Transformer 2 is getting a lot of attention due to its processor, which is the world’s first quad-core mobile processor according to Nvidia. The new Tegra 3 consists an ARM Cortex A9 CPU with integrated 12-core GeForce GPU. Another compelling feature of the new Transformer Prime is its ability to ”transform” into a conventional laptop by using a docking station that can be purchased separately.
Aside from the new Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core SoC and the docking station add-on, the new Transformer Prime is sporting a 10.1-inch full color screen, and equipped with two cameras, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, HDMI, card reader, and Android Honeycomb tablet operating system. The Transformer Prime is also upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich, and the update is expected to arrive early next year.
An Nvidia YouTube video posted last week revealed that the new Transformer Prime’s Ice Cream Sandwich is running smoothly. The video also demonstrated how the new Google mobile operating system handles a tablet computer and how a compatible application is taking advantage of the new platform which was designed by Google from the ground up.

HTC Ville with Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich reappears

HTC Ville leaks online, now with capacitive buttons and qHD touchscreen.

First leak was claiming that the HTC Ville will not include capacitive buttons because it will include Google’s new Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Now, a new leak appeared online courtesy of Pocket Now, and the render revealed that the new HTC smartphone will include buttons.
For starters, the Android Ice Cream Sandwich doesn’t require capacitive buttons.
Reports say the HTC Ville will also include 4.3-inch qHD screen or touchscreen with resolution of 540 x 960. Apparently, HTC is already selling a smartphone with HD screen, the HTC Rezound with 720p touchscreen so it looks like the Taiwan-based company is not yet ready to offer more iPhone-killer smartphones with higher pixel density.
The report adds that the HTC Ville will include an 8-megapixel primary digital camera, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, and thickness of 8.49mm. No word yet regarding the device’s release date but a MWC or Mobile World Congress announcement and release date under the banner of April are highly possible.
Aside from the HTC Ville, a set of new Android devices are also expected to arrive next year, and the devices are expected to use the Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The new Google mobile operating system includes features like Face Unlock, Voice to text, better user interface and better applications support. By the way, Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone.

Enandis's Megaphone
Enandis: Something about this company's new Megaphone makes us want want to shout Ricola! We'll resist the temptation, but Enandis's line of passive-amplification devices for the iPhone and iPod touch does remind us quite a bit of the Alps. Just place your iOS device's speaker at the small end, and the ceramic horn will create big sound for music or hands-free phone conferencing. To purchase the Megaphone, you'll have to navigate the company's multilingual website—not necessarily an easy task. The basic model starts at €399.

The Joy Factory's Megaphone
The Joy Factory: Bicyclists and stroller-pushing parents are the target audience for The Joy Factory's $50 StormCruiser, a mount for the iPhone 4 and 4S that attaches to the handlebars of whichever wheeled contraption you're using. The mount includes an element-proof enclosure that offers protection against water, dust, and grease, while giving users access to their music, exercise apps, or GPS programs while out on the trail.

Onkyo: The veteran audio company has unveiled its $299 CS-345 CD Mini System, a compact stereo that can play CDs, tune in AM/FM radio, and host your iOS device. The CS-345 can also play video from your iPhone or iPad on a TV. The system includes a pair of two-way, bass-reflex speakers, as well as a remote control. Onkyo pitches the system as perfect for a dorm room or home office.

Photojojo's iPhone Lens Dial
Photojojo: Designed for serious iPhone photographers, Photojojo's $250 iPhone Lens Dial is a protective can that lets iPhone users choose between three high-quality optical lenses—wide-angle, fisheye, and telephoto—that add versatility to the phone's camera. The accessory does more than just enables great photo-making, though, as the aluminum design brings a steampunkish quality to your phone. The Lens Dial sports two tripod mounts, allowing you to take photos in either portrait or landscape mode.

A Powerbag backpack
Powerbag: Charging your iPhone or iPad can be a tricky proposition when you're on the go. Powerbag offers a solution with its new line of backpacks, messenger bags, and briefcases. The bags, which range in price from $140 to $250, include a built-in battery capable of powering up to four devices—including e-readers and some laptops—at the same time while you're in transit. The developers say the battery holds enough juice to top off your iPhone twice.

Russound: Sure, winter is about to get under way, but that's no reason to keep the party inside. Russound's AirGo lets you take your music outdoors with a speaker system, designed to withstand the elements, that lets you stream your music via AirPlay from your iOS device or computer. Interestingly, the system gains AirPlay support through an AirPort Express unit (not included) you install inside a weatherproof chamber. The company has not announced pricing or shipping information.

Spatial View's 3DeeSlide
Spatial View: The growing use of 3D video is making its way to the iPhone, as Spatial View has introduced its new 3DeeSlide system, which pairs a free app with a $35 lens that slides over the face of your iPhone 4 or 4S, letting you view 3D videos on your phone without requiring special glasses. (A $10 lens is available for use with the iPhone 3G and 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch.)

Speakal's mi-Soccer
Speakal: If your goooooooooooooooooooooal in life is to bring together your love of sports and Apple devices, Speakal's $100 miSoccer docking system for the iPhone and iPod touch should be quite a kick. The soccer-ball-shaped system offers dual two-way speakers along with a dock cradle for your iOS device; the dock charges your iOS device, as well. We'd pitch you more on the technical specs of this system, but hey: It's a speaker system that looks like a soccer ball! It comes in black/white, red/white, or blue/white. But don't actually kick the miSoccer; it's not meant for use in games.

The Swivl
Swivl: Recent iterations of the iPhone have turned the device into a video-creation machine. The $160 Swivl helps that process along by giving your phone a mount for hands-free recording, but the device goes a step or two beyond that: Attach a special marker to yourself, and Swivl swivels on its base to follow you around the room during video recording. You can move around even as you go hands-free. Swivl lets you position your iPhone in horizontal or vertical orientation; it also can be used with any tripod-mountable pocket camera.

The SunLeaf Pro
SunLeaf: If you're out camping—or if you're simply looking for a green way to charge your iOS device—the $179 SunLeaf Pro charging system will prove useful. This solar charger unfolds like your iPad's SmartCover and provides up to 18 watts of power during charging. (Your iPad requires only 10 watts; SunLeaf says the excess capacity should help the device charge at full speed even during sub-optimal solar conditions.) The SunLeaf Pro is also lightweight—less than 2 pounds

Gem Update: Printopia 2.1.5 offers major improvements to a Gems favorite

The AirPrint feature of iOS 4.2 promised to let you print, wirelessly, from your iOS device to any printer shared by your Mac. Unfortunately, AirPrint ended up working with only a few specific, AirPrint-enabled printers. One of the most popular recent Mac Gems, especially around the Macworld offices, is Printopia, a utility that delivers on Apple’s unfulfilled promise—and does much more.

I originally reviewed Printopia a year ago. As I explained then, Printopia takes over where AirPrint leaves off, letting your Mac share all or any configured printers, no matter how they’re connected to your Mac, with iOS devices on your local wireless network. In any iOS app that supports printing, you just tap the Print button, choose one of those printers, and print! And Printopia works with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and even 10.5 (Leopard)—and even with PowerPC Macs—making AirPrint available to anyone with a recent Mac. (Your iOS devices must be running iOS 4.2 or later.)

But Printopia had a number of other tricks up it virtual sleeve that made the utility useful even if you never actually needed to print. A special Send to Mac printer let you save—by printing—a PDF copy of a document, or a JPEG or PNG version of an image, to a Printopia folder in your Mac’s Documents folder. And a Send To Dropbox On Mac printer let you save a document to your Mac’s Dropbox () folder, where the file is instantly synced to all your other Dropbox-enabled devices. These features were great for, say, saving receipts from online purchases made on your iPad or iPhone, and for transferring iOS screenshots to your Macs.

Since that review, Ecamm Network has released several significant updates to Printopia, including version 2.0 in April and version 2.1.5 earlier this week. Those updates have included a number of new features that have made Printopia even more useful. For example, you can now create an unlimited number of Save To Mac and Save To Dropbox virtual printers, each of them saving documents to a different folder on your Mac or inside your Dropbox folder, respectively. You choose which of those folders to save to by simply choosing a different virtual printer when printing.

But my favorite new feature is that you can set up Mac applications as virtual printers and then “print” to them. Doing so sends a copy of the document to your Mac and immediately opens the document in the chosen application. So, for example, you can send an iPad screenshot to your favorite Mac image editor, such as Acorn or Photoshop; the screenshot opens in that program, ready for editing. Or you can send a PDF directly from your iPhone to PDFpen on your Mac for annotation, or to Evernote for filing. (In fact, if Evernote is installed on your Mac, Printopia automatically creates an Evernote virtual printer for you.)

Similarly, you can configure any PDF workflow—those options under the PDF pop-up menu in Mac printing dialogs—as a virtual printer, letting you process documents you print from your iOS device. To use the screenshot example again, you could set up a PDF workflow that opens an image in Preview, resizes it to a particular size, and then saves it, as a PNG file, in your Website Images folder.

(Note that not every Mac program supports multi-page documents. For example, if you send a four-page document to an image editor, the program will likely display only the first page of the document.)

Also new since my original review is password security for each printer, real or virtual, so even if someone has access to your Wi-Fi network, they can’t print to your printer(s), or save files to your Mac(s), without the appropriate password(s). Similarly, you can now configure default settings for every printer. For real printers, this includes most of the settings—paper size, paper handling, layout, output quality—you’d see in a Mac OS X printing dialog. For virtual printers, you can change the name of the printer and, for save-to virtual printers, the save location and whether saved files are opened automatically.

Another nifty new feature is support for AirPrint printing from Lion. In other words, all the options available to iOS devices on your local network are also available to any Macs running Mac OS X 10.7 or later. Using the Print & Scan pane of System Preferences (or by choosing the printer in the Printer pop-up menu in any OS X printing dialog), you can set up any Printopia-provided printer or virtual printer as a standard OS X printer. So you get the same save-a-Web-receipt-to-my-iMac and open-a-screenshot-on-my-iMac features on your MacBook as you get on your iPhone.

This feature has a couple side benefits, as well. First, as long as your other Macs are running Lion, you can disable OS X’s Printer Sharing feature and just use Printopia—you don’t need to use Printer Sharing and Printopia to share your printers with both Macs and iOS devices. Second, if you’ve got a printer that doesn’t have Lion drivers, you can connect the printer to a Mac running Printopia under, say, Leopard and then print to that printer from any Mac running OS X 10.7, instantly adding Lion support.

Ecamm has also fixed a number of minor bugs, such as one that reduced the quality of printed photos in certain circumstances, and added some useful tweaks. For example, Printopia can automatically fit your document to a each printer’s printable area, and when sending a photo to your Mac, the date and time the photo was originally taken are used both in the resulting file’s name and to set the date and time of the file itself. Printopia also now supports more printers, it supports duplex printing with particular printer models, and it works better with the OS X firewall.

As with the original version, Printopia’s biggest limitation is that it requires that iOS devices—and, now, Macs running Lion—be on the same network with a computer that’s on and awake. But until the Ecamm folks can work technological magic, that limitation will remain, just as it does for OS X’s own Printer Sharing feature.

Printopia was already one of our favorite bits of software, and with the improvements the developer has added over the past year, it’s even more of a must-have.

Some malls track shoppers through their cell phones this holiday season

For some mall shoppers, Black Friday has become Track Friday.

Thanks to a snoopy piece of tech from a U.K. company called Path Intelligence, some malls in Europe, Australia, and the United States will be tracking shoppers' movements today through their cell phones.

A small number of discreet monitoring units installed throughout a mall, the company says, can grab signals from consumers' mobile phones and track their movements with an accuracy of "a few meters." That information is fed to a processing center where it is audited and analyzed to create a real-time picture of traffic flow through a shopping center. Mall operators can keep constant tabs on the information through Path Intelligence's secure web-based reporting system.

As you'd expect with someone engaged in this kind of unsettling activity, the company swears it's committed to protecting the privacy of the people it's surveilling. "[O]ur detector units do not allow us to obtain your telephone number, to listen to any of your calls, read any SMS messages read or sent by you, or to log details of any calls or SMS messages made or received by you," Path Intelligence states on its website. "Neither does any of the information received allow us to identify you or any group of individuals."

Two U.S. malls—Promenade Temecula in Southern California and Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, Va.—will be launching the tracking service today and will use it through New Year's Day, according to a report by CNN.
With the system, mall operators hope to gather information such as how many shoppers who visit one store also visit another (for example, how many Nordstrom shoppers also shop at Starbucks), how long a typical customer spends in a store, and what are the most unpopular spots in the mall.

Malls have tracked shopping traffic for some time, but this is the first time cell phones have been used to do it, CNN reported.

"We won't be looking at singular shoppers," Stephanie Shriver-Engdahl, vice president of digital strategy for Forest City Commercial Management, the outfit that manages both malls, told CNN. "The system monitors patterns of movement. We can see, like migrating birds, where people are going to."

Whether anonymous tracking is harmless or not, the malls aren't taking any chances on the privacy front. They're hanging small signs around their premises informing shoppers that their cell phones are being used to track them. Anyone who wants to opt out of the system can simply turn off their phone. That's quite a high-handed recommendation, considering how mobiles have been integrated into the shopping experience of many shoppers, and one very likely to be ignored, whether this tracking scheme violates shoppers' privacy or not.

Kindle Fire vs iPad 2, Nook Tablet: The Black Friday 2011 edition

Amazon’s cheap Kindle Fire competes against the iPad 2 and Barnes and Noble’s cheap tab on Black Friday.

Amazon has unveiled its Black Friday Deals list but it looks like the retail chain isn’t ready to slash the price of the Kindle Fire yet.
According to company’s shopping site, the Kindle Fire is still $199, which is the product’s official price tag. It is worth noting that other Kindle products including the Kindle DX are included in the Black Friday Deals.
Kindle Fire is one of the cheapest Android tablets in the market right now, in fact, the Fire could be the cheapest “high-end” Android tablet just because it includes a dual-core CPU and a robust ecosystem. Apparently, Amazon has tweaked the Google Android operating system to include its own app store and other digital online stores like the MP3 store and the Kindle e-Books store.
Amazon’s tablet strategy is similar to Nook Tablet, Barnes and Noble’s $249 tablet running a custom Android Gingerbread operating system, and dual-core CPU. The new Nook is also not included in Barnes and Noble’s Black Friday sale list.
Meanwhile, Apple is trying its best to stop the new cheap Android tablets with the Black Friday iPad 2 sale. According to the company’s official shopping website, the iPad 2 is now $41 cheaper, and the cheapest model (16GB model) is now $458 only, the 32GB is $548 while the high-end 64GB is priced at $638. The cheapest iPad 2 now is still $259 more expensive than the Kindle Fire.
Apple is trying to attract the customers with the new iOS 5 operating system which supports the new iCloud service, iTunes Match, new gestures for the iPad, deeper Twitter integration, PC free activation so users can activate the iPad without a PC or Mac and the wireless software update which is similar to Android’s.
Are you willing to shell out $458 for an iPad 2? With $458, you can also buy one Kindle Fire and one Nook Tablet with a total bill of $448.
According to a survey conducted before the Black Friday weekend, the iPad 2 is the most popular tablet with 65 percent of consumers saying that they’ll buy Apple’s tablet computer, while 24 percent said they want the new Amazon tablet. Barnes and Noble’s Nook Tablet took the bottom slot with 11% of consumers saying that they will try the Nook’s new ecosystem.

Droid Razr enjoys a Galaxy Nexus-less Black Friday 2011

Galaxy Nexus not yet available, while some retailers offering cheaper Droid Razr.

Can the Motorola Droid Razr outsell the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone? Well, maybe — with the help of Black Friday.
Apparently, the subsidized Galaxy Nexus is not yet available here in United States and the smartphone obviously missed the Black Friday rush, while the Motorola Droid Razr is now cheaper courtesy of third-party retailers.
According to reports, the Droid Razr is now cheaper in some stores, and the cheapest so far is the Droid Razr Black Friday deal from Amazon Wireless, only $0.01 with a 2-year contract agreement. However, Amazon’s Droid Razr is now listed under “Backordered” with up to 9 days delivery delay.
Amazon is also offering other cheap but high-end Android smartphones like Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch of Sprint, Galaxy S II Skyrocket of AT&T and Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic for a penny too.
Rumors say Verizon will sell the Galaxy Nexus on November 29 or December 8 using the $199 price tag which is $100 cheaper than the original price of the Droid Razr and the HTC Rezound, the Taiwan-based company’s second Verizon LTE phone, and the first LTE Android smartphone with 720p screen (here in United States).
The Motorola Droid Razr is the thinnest LTE Android smartphone yet, only 7.1 mm thick and also the first Motorola smartphone that will get the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system early next year. Other features include 4.3-inch qHD screen, 8-megapixel primary camera, front-facing camera and additional features courtesy of Motorola’s exclusive accessories.
Reviews say the Droid Razr’s weaknesses are screen quality and lack of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, while the thin profile and Long Term Evolution are its advantages.
Verizon Wireless already said in a statement this month that the Droid Razr was set to receive “tremendous advertising weight” this month, indirectly suggesting that the Droid Razr is Verizon’s November (favorite) smartphone, and not the HTC Rezound or the Galaxy Nexus (if Verizon will sell it on the 29th).

Galaxy Nexus Verizon release date, price revealed?

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus information revealed? Maybe.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus is not yet available, and yes, there’s a possibility that the new Android smartphone is delayed due to “unknown reasons.”
According to a report posted by Droid Life, an ad campaign has revealed that the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone should have already been available in United States on Black Friday sporting the tag price of $199.99. See the leaked advertisement below this article.
Apparently, new rumors are claiming that the Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime according to Best Buy) is delayed due to testing problems, and next rumored release date is on December 8, 2011. However, there’s also a rumor claiming that November 29 release date is possible. Take the new rumors with a grain of salt.
Aside from the release date, it is highly possible that the price of the Galaxy Nexus will change too, but if Verizon will still use the $199.99 tag price, then the device will transform into an Android smartphone “game changer.” In fact, the Galaxy Nexus may be the cheapest high-end LTE device of Verizon Wireless compared to the Droid Razr and the HTC Rezound with the $299.99 tag price.
It is worth noting that the $199.99 tag price requires 2 year contract agreement and additional smartphone data plan.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, and the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime) is the first variant that will include the LTE or Long Term Evolution technology. For starters, the LTE is faster than the 3G or HSPA+ model (available in United Kingdom).
The Galaxy Nexus is also the first “Nexus” smartphone from Google that will include the top of the line high-definition screen (720p resolution) and also the first Nexus to include a dual-core CPU and LTE (in United States only).
Other features of the Galaxy nexus are: 1GB of RAM, 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 5-megapixel back facing digital camera with zero shutter lag, front-facing camera, Face Unlock (Ice Cream Sandwich), instant voice to text feature, thin profile (8.9 mm), and weighs 135g only.
Are you willing to wait?

Apple's Latest iPod Touch is More Advanced Than the iPad Read more: http://technorati.com/technology/gadgets/article/apples-latest-ipod-touch-is-more/#ixzz1ehIha5VX

Apple recently unveiled the 2010 version of the iPod Touch, and the amount of technology packed into the tiny gadget is staggering to say the least. I was considering the purchase of an iPad in the next few weeks but I am reconsidering and looking at the new iPod Touch instead.

Even though Apple considers the iPad and iPod Touch to be targeted towards completely different markets, for the most part the two devices can perform the same tasks.  There are some distinct differences, however, that might sway a user to choose the iPod Touch over the iPad. Here is a high-level comparison of the differences between the iPad and iPod Touch 2010:

iPad:
9.7-inch display with 132 pixels per inch (PPI)
3G wireless option available
Digital compass
GPS built-in (in 3G models)
Built-in speaker and microphone
9-10 hour battery life
Additional office apps only available for the iPad

iPod touch 2010:

3.5 inch screen with 326 pixels per inch (PPI) Retina display
Highly portable
Front and Rear Cameras
HD Video Recording
Three-axis gyro -detects motion more accurately
7-8 hour battery life

For me, there are three major advantages of the 4th Generation iPod Touch over the current iPad. The first is the very high-quality Retina display which displays 326 pixels per inch (PPI) as opposed to the iPad's 132 PPI display.

Secondly, the dual cameras allow the iPod Touch to use Apple's new FaceTime application that is also available in the iPhone 4G. The FaceTime application is an open standard so if it becomes highly popular, I can see other video conferencing solutions such as Skype to integrate with the app. Also, the ability to shoot high-quality 720p video is a key factor in my mind.

Apps Rush: Noddy in Toyland, Comet, 360 Panorama, Dream Zoo, Timelines for Facebook and more

Noddy and friends are racing their way onto iPhone and iPad

A selection of 16 apps for you today:

Noddy in Toyland

Noddy is the latest famous children's character to pop up on the App Store, with a game for iPhone and iPad. In fact, it's a collection of mini-games from publisher Avanquest, focused on reasoning, deductive skills, memory, concentration and observation skills. The link above is for the iPhone version, but there's a separate HD iPad game.
iPhone / iPad

Comet

This Christmas is expected to be a big one for mobile shopping. Comet is the latest UK retailer to launch its own app, which is available on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and iPad. Developed by Grapple Mobile, it includes a feature for people to scan barcodes in-store and then read reviews from consumers and experts.
iPhone / Android / BlackBerry / iPad

360 Panorama

There are a number of apps helping people shoot photographic panoramas, but 360 Panorama looks like one of the slickest. Available for iPhone and Android, it helps users to stitch together shots as they take them.
iPhone / Android

Dream Zoo

It's a busy mobile month for Zynga, having already released new games Mafia Wars Shakedown and CityVille Holidaytown. The company's third iOS release in November is Dream Zoo, an all-new game that involves building a zoo, breeding animal varieties and playing mini-games.
iPhone / iPad

Toy Village

Glu Mobile's latest mobile social game is (yet) another spin on the FarmVille / CityVille town-building genre, except this time with toys as the digital citizens. Expect crops, shops and in-app purchases for virtual currency.
iPhone / Android

Timelines for Facebook

Facebook has yet to roll it new Timeline feature out beyond developers, but Loytr – the company behind iPad app MyPad – has got in early with a new app that brings Timeline-like features to the social network. It looks very slick, although the question is how appealing it will be if and when Facebook brings official Timelines to its own iPad app.

City Spy: James Murdoch's Sunday Times iPad woes

Now that James Murdoch has quit the boards of The Sun and The Times and Sunday Times, as first revealed in these pages yesterday, at least he can't take the rap for this new problem.

Sunday Times iPad subscribers are furious after problems for the last two weeks with downloading the paper. Sunday Times editor John Witherow has now written a personal email of apology to subscribers. "Our teams are working hard to fix the cause of the problem," he says, blaming a "record number of readers" who tried to look at the paper between 8am and 10am. That doesn't seem to be the only technical problem at Wapping. Says a City Spy reader: "News International sent me an email asking me to call and renew my subscription.

But I've finally snapped after six attempts to renew my credit-card details as follows: 'I'm sorry, we're experiencing a high level of calls at the moment. Please hold.' And hold, and hold. Then try again and again, and again." City Spy is sure all of NI's problems with phones are in the past.

* News International says it is just "a matter of housekeeping" that James Murdoch has quit the boards of The Sun and The Times as he will have less time because he is moving to New York. Really? His father Rupert was a director of The Sun and The Times companies for years while living in the Big Apple.

Size matters in LSE vs Japan fight
Is the soon-to-launch Japan Exchange Group, a merger between the Tokyo and Osaka trading exchanges, really going to overtake the London Stock Exchange to become the world's third-biggest stock market? The Tokyo and Osaka exchanges are jointly larger than the LSE in terms of domestic market capitalisation - roughly $3.7 trillion against $3.5 trillion. But this doesn't take into account London's hefty international listings market cap. The LSE has 326 such listings while Tokyo only has about a dozen and Osaka fewer than that. Once international listings are included, the LSE market cap is $5.75 trillion, comfortably ahead of the new merged Japanese entity. On that basis, London won't be giving up its claim to third place behind NYSE and Nasdaq...

* Lord Green, the Trade Minister we know better know as former HSBC boss Stephen Green, has been elucidating on his key advice to smaller would-be exporters on how to crack foreign markets. His suggestion is get to know how business thinks by reading the Financial Times. Heaven help them.

* Thomson Reuters boss Tom Glocer sends a cheery Thanksgiving message to staff: "I know that many people are tired of organizational change and that the rumor mill is hyperactive. I understand. Change and the uncertainty that comes with it are hard to handle." He adds: "The fact that we are changing to keep pace may be a source of anxiety for some, but overall it should be a source of comfort. Any company that tries to stand still today will find itself moving backward. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for all the good things about our company and that Thomson Reuters is blessed with many thousands of talented people who will settle for nothing less than excellence." That does not sound entirely reassuring...

* Ping! An email from the taxman. HMRC is "launching a new unit to tackle those hiding money and assets offshore". The grandly named Offshore Co-ordination Unit will, apparently, "focus solely on those UK citizens with offshore accounts, using their technical expertise and investigation experience to identify and pursue those who hide income and capital offshore to avoid UK tax and duties". What took them so long?

Gisele stock on upward curve
Forget FTSE tracker funds. The latest index doing the rounds is the Gisele Stock Index. It's all down to Gisele Bündchen, the richest supermodel in the world, who makes about $45 million a year. "Gisele, who receives most of her income in euros and Brazilian reals, is a celebrity endorser and spokesperson for numerous products of many publicly traded companies," reports Stockerblog. Tracking the stocks she is connected with from 2007, the Gisele Bündchen Stock Index - including Volkswagen, Polo Ralph Lauren, Brazilian mobile operator Vivo Participacoes and Procter & Gamble (Pantene shampoo in Brazil) - is up 41% since January 2007. The Dow, by comparison, is down 4%.

Burying bad news at Royal Mail, Shane?
The Royal Mail chose Monday to slip out its half-year results, in which it reported a dramatic plunge in the volume of letters it handles.

Doubtless it was just a coincidence that Royal Mail bosses had not bothered telling the clutch of Fleet Street reporters and newswire journalists who ordinarily cover the postal service. Many found themselves unable to report the story in any detail as they were on duty at the all-day CBI annual conference.

Was this a PR cock-up - had the Royal Mail's press office forgotten to check the events diary? - or
a conspiracy, given that most of the hacks who follow the Royal Mail are generally unsympathetic
to the company?

City Spy could not imagine that the Royal Mail would stoop so low as to bury bad news. But it is a fact that the posties' newish head of communications is one Shane O'Riordan, a man of gargantuan spinning capabilities, as witnessed from his days at Halifax and Lloyds Banking Group.

* Shares in insurance giant Admiral fell by a third earlier this month after a shocker of a profit warning. Judging from City Spy's recent experience with women's car insurance specialist subsidiary Diamond, it is planning to make up the shortfall by taking the cudgel to its existing customers. After an eye-watering renewal quote this week, an internet search quickly produced a rival offer more than £100 cheaper. No explanation for the hike from the chirpy man at the end of the phone, who asks: "Can we see if we can match the price?" No, you bloody well can't. How about offering your best price to a customer of four years' standing in the first place? Goodbye.

Samsung's Anti-Apple Ad: Fanboys, IPhone 4S Mocked In Latest Galaxy S II Commercial (VIDEO)

The ongoing battle between Apple and Samsung just hopped from the courtroom to the TV box.

Samsung, with its latest ad for the Galaxy S II smartphone, takes direct shots at Apple, mocking the Apple super-fans who wait in long lines for the newest iPhone. Samsung's argument? There is a better phone -- namely, the Samsung Galaxy S II -- available without the wait and with better features.

Here's the full advertisement:

For those that can't watch, among the charges leveled by Samsung at Apple iPhone buyers are:
- They wait in long lines for a phone with inferior specs (no 4G, smaller screen).
- They bought a phone with a sketchy battery life.
- All they care about is showing off that they were early adopters. ("If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?")
- They equate creativity with owning Apple products. ("Dude, you're a barista.")

Ability of human beings to be simultaneously creative and employed as baristas notwithstanding, Samsung will be running these ads in 30-second form on Facebook and elsewhere starting soon, according to Business Insider.

In terms of hardware, Samsung is perhaps Apple's most legitimate competitor in the global smartphone market. It was recently widely reported that Samsung had overtaken Apple as the world's number one smartphone maker in the third quarter of 2011, though most expect Apple to regain that lead following the launch of the hot-selling iPhone 4S.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone running Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," is set to launch in the United States in December and become the top-of-the-line Android phone and a direct competitor to the latest Apple phone.

In countries around the globe, Samsung and Apple are currently engaged in a growing number of lawsuits over the designs of the iPhone/iPad and Samsung's Galaxy smartphones/tablets. (Click here for an overview of the legal battle between the two tech behemoths.)

In an interview with Business Insider, two Samsung marketing execs described their intended audience for the anti-iPhone ads.

"We're not targeting fanboys," the execs said, per Business Insider. "We're not going to convert them. We're using them as a foil to target current Android users upgrading to a new phone and people entering the smartphone market for the first time."

Both the Galaxy S II and the iPhone 4S are available for $199 with a two-year contract.

Samsung’s ‘Tab-phone’ Galaxy Note Now In India

Samsung has launched its latest smartphone ‘Galaxy Note’ in India. The mobile phone was first unveiled during the IFA 2011 event in Berlin, Germany. We had earlier predicted the price of the device at around Rs 35,000 and the actual number is very close to it. The mobile phone is available for Rs 34,990. Let’s have a brief look at the specifications of the device.

The device comes with a mammoth display screen of 5.3 inch (the largest offered till now by Samsung) high definition super AMOLED multi-touch display screen (1280×800 pixel resolution) and it runs on the Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) operating system (which will be upgradable to Android Ice Cream Sandwich). The company is additionally providing ‘S-Pen’, an advanced stylus, for better input. Also, Samsung has combined the Samsung TouchWiz user interface with Samsung Live Panel user interface for enhanced user experience.

Galaxy Note runs on a dual-core 1.4 GHz Exynos microprocessor with Mali-400MP graphics chip and it has 1GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 16GB which can be extended up to 48GB with the help of a 32GB microSD card.

It comes with an 8 mega pixel rear camera with LED flash that can record full high definition (HD) videos (1080p) at 30 frames per second (fps). A 2 mega pixel front facing camera is also provided for video calling. The phone also has a new music player with SoundAlive feature (enhances audio) and a Stereo FM radio with RDS.

The dimensions of the device are 146.85mm x 82.95mm x 9.65mm and its weight is 178 grams. The device has a 2,500 mAh battery and comes with A-GPS with Glonass.

The closest competitors of the device in the Indian market in terms of price and specifications are Samsung’s own Galaxy S II (Rs 30,000), HTC’s Sensation (Rs 29,600) and EVO 3D (Rs 35,000), BlackBerry’s Torch 9810 (Rs 30,099) and Torch 9860 (Rs 28,000) and LG’s Optimus 3D (Rs 35,000). Additionally, Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus will also compete with the device once it is launched in India.

First there were mobile phones; then came the wave of smartphones which was directly followed by the Tablet rage. With the launch of devices like the Galaxy note one cannot help but wonder which category to put it in. It offers the functionality of a smartphone and the convenience of a Tablet, so I guess we will just come up with a new category for such devices. We will call such devices ‘Tab-phones’.

LG Prada K2 Teased In New Concept Sketches – Looks To Bring Sexy Back To Android

Looks like LG is bringing sexy back with their upcoming Prada K2. The Prada phone 3.0 was teased in these conceptual sketches showing off a very sexy exterior, if I do say so myself. The design is very reminiscent of the new Nokia Lumia form factor or even the older iPod Nano’s — which, only seems fitting seeing how the it’s believed the OG iPhone “stole” LG’s all touchscreen design for the Prada back in the day. Something I’m sure LG has never forgotten.
Rumors suggest the LG Prada K2 could have a 4.3-inch 2nd generation Nova HD display, dual-core processor followed by an 8MP shooter in the rear and 1.3MP on the front. The device is supposed to launch in early 2012 and let’s hope LG has enough sense to fill this thing with Ice Cream Sandwich and release stateside. Full press release can be found below. What do you guys think? Hot or not?

PRADA AND LG SIGN EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT CEMENTING PARTNERSHIP
PRADA Phone by LG 3.0 to be launched in 2012; the collaboration has resulted in
mobile phones with a strong identity
SEOUL, Nov. 24, 2011 -- PRADA and LG Electronics (LG) today renewed their exclusive mobile phone partnership at a signing ceremony in Seoul, Korea. Building on this partnership’s previous success, the two companies will develop the PRADA phone by LG 3.0, for launch in early 2012.
Under this partnership, LG will be PRADA’s exclusive mobile phone partner. The collaboration, which began in 2006 and resulted in two premium mobile phones being introduced in 2007 and 2008, focuses on key elements within the smartphone, including software and user interface down to its design and packaging.
“The partnership between Prada and LG has always been characterised by an innovative approach and uncompromised quality of style, design and breakthrough technology,” said Mr. Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of PRADA Group. “These values are common to both our brands, which have always anticipated, and often set, the trends in many fields. We were therefore delighted to cooperate again with LG in the development of the latest creation of the mobile communication industry.”
“Our working relationship with PRADA is unique in its longevity and success, something no other phone company and luxury brand have been able to replicate,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Having successfully launched two PRADA phones by LG, we look forward to collaborating further to develop premium handsets with a strong identity and the most sophisticated style.”
The PRADA phone by LG 1.0, a pioneer in the mobile phone space, was an unqualified success, selling over one million units. This premium handset combined high-end technology with a design embodying superior style. As evidence of its place in design history, the PRADA phone by LG 1.0 is part of the permanent collection in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Shanghai.
The PRADA phones by LG were avant-garde in the technology they offered to users. The PRADA phone by LG 1.0 was the world’s first touchscreen mobile phone, and the 2.0 provided an innovative mobile experience through its unique watch with Link technology, which allowed for easy access to caller ID, SMS text messages, call history, call block and two-way alarm notification.
