Warning: Kids love expensive devices.
Searching for the next best gift for your young son or daughter? Well, Nielsen’s data is suggesting that American kids want iDevices, or Apple devices sporting the tag price of $99 to $849 depending on device and/or storage. Yeah, they now want expensive gifts.
According to Nielsen’s latest data for the coming holiday-shopping season, kids aged 6 to 12 years old want an iPad, iPod touch or an iPhone for the holidays. The data doesn’t include the exact model/s, but the latest Apple devices are the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and the new iPod Touch White (4th generation). It is safe to speculate that kids want the latest and greatest Apple product/s because they read articles on the internet or they watch TV shows.
The Nielsen Company’s latest infographic/data show that the iPad is the most desired consumer electronic product, and 44% of the children surveyed want the popular Apple tablet PC, while 30% of the kids said they want an iPod touch and 27% want an iPhone.
Unsurprisingly, gaming devices are not the hottest devices. Only 25% said they want a new Nintendo 3DS while 23% of the of six-to-twelves respondents want a Kinect for Xbox 360. It is worth noting that children can also play games on the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch or other similar devices so it is highly possible that kids want more features too. Nintendo 3DS is cheaper than the iPhone or the iPad, sporting the tag price of $169.99, while the Kinect for Xbox 360 is priced at $299.99 (4GB).
Kids have also shown their love for other tablet computers, possibly the Android-powered tablets. Nielsen is reporting that 25% of kids aged 6 to 12 years old want a non-iPad tablet. Oops, some kids are non-Apple fans too!
Sadly, only 16% of kids want a non-Apple smartphone, or devices that are running other operating system like Android or Windows Phone, or even BlackBerry. According to the latest smartphone market share data here in US (for the adults, apparently), the Android platform is the most popular while Apple remained second and RIM grabbed the third spot. Well, it looks like kids are not into dual-core, LTE, larger screen, and other features offered by other smartphones.
Another thing worth noting is the computer category which possibly includes both the Mac and the Windows. Only 25% of kids want a new computer which is almost 20% less than the iPad-loving kids. Apparently, kids love “touch” and “Angry Birds,” and they’re not just into productivity yet.
According to Apple’s product page, the iPhone 4S is priced at $649 for the 16GB (unlocked), $749 for the 32GB and $849 for the new high-end 64GB, while high-end Android devices also sports almost the same tag price/s. Devices with the contract agreement are less expensive, but also requires data agreement aside from the talk plan/s. Ka ching!
Meanwhile, the iPad 2 is still a very expensive device. Third party retailers offer cheaper iPads. The cheapest iPad 2 available is the 16GB WiFi only sporting the $499 price tag. You’re a lucky parent if your kid belongs to the Android fans club because Android devices are more affordable especially the tablets offered by Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The new Kindle Fire is just $199 while the Nook Tablet is $249 only. It is worth noting that the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet are using forked version of Android to include new stores and other credit card related activities like e-Book store, mp3 store and video rental store applications.
These are expensive devices, but kids can also learn from them. In fact, Android and Apple’s iOS offer educational activities like applications, educational digital books and easy access to internet where they can research (via Google, WikiPedia), others. However, parent’s attention is still needed because internet can be both helpful and harmful. For example, social networking sites often have positive and negative effects based on studies presented by researchers.
