Galaxy Nexus or Nexus Prime? Plus, Verizon will release the phone this month?
It is a bit salty, but also very tasty.
Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus or “Galaxy Nexus” is the official name of the 2011 Nexus device which includes the latest and greatest version of Android yet, the Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich. But it looks like Verizon wants a new brand name (if this new rumor is to be believed).
Best Buy’s December catalog was leaked online by PhAndroid and surprisingly, the document includes a lot of undisclosed information like the brand name “Nexus Prime” and the device’s possible release date.
The document said the “prices good for all Best Buy mobile stores from 11/27/11 to 12/25/11,” which is suggesting that the phone will arrive later this month or early next month. Well, we should take this new rumor/leak with a grain of salt knowing that Best Buy is known for messing up some of its ads especially the flyers (like the infamous TouchPad running Google Android Honeycomb advertisement). But here’s the catch — yeah, there’s a catch: Almost all information written on the catalog about the Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime is accurate.
Some of the information listed like the phrase about the Ice Cream Sandwich explaining that it is the “sum of the Honeycomb and Gingerbread builds,” the 4.6-inch screen (close enough), the 4G LTE or Long Term Evolution feature which is the unique feature that the US variant will offer, and the 5-megapixel primary digital camera are obviously true and very accurate, including the added features of the phone’s operating system like 3D maps, voice search and Google’s social networking site integration, the enhanced Google+ support.
Is it possible that Verizon wants its phone to be unique? Another good example is the Google Android smartphone from Motorola Mobility, the Motorola Droid Razr which is called “Motorola Razr” without the Droid branding in other countries like UK, Australia and Hong Kong.
The “Nexus Prime” name was used by rumors before the device’s official announcement last month in Asia. In fact, months-long rumors posted by tech sites (including us) have used the Nexus Prime name, mainly because it sounds “cooler” than the Galaxy name. Some sites (including us) are still using the Nexus Prime name due to its popularity among internet readers.
Another thing that we need to discuss is the way the phone is displayed in the catalog. Best Buy is promoting the Nexus Prime by putting it in the middle of two Galaxy S II variants of other wireless carriers, AT&T’s Galaxy S2 and Sprint’s Epic 4G Touch and making it a part of the Galaxy S II lineup. Apparently, Verizon Wireless has decided to skip Samsung’s “most popular” smartphone to date because they want the latest and greatest, which is obviously the first ICS phone.
Galaxy Nexus is now available in United Kingdom, and other countries are expected to get the device (online) next week and by December 1st. Multiple rumors say the phone will arrive this month in the United States, while some are pointing to the first week of December. Either way, Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus or Nexus Prime will continue to dominate the pages of tech sites until the official release date announcement.
