LG Optimus smartphones getting Google Android 4.0 next year

LG confirms Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for its Optimus smartphone lineup.

After dismissing all the rumors last month, LG has confirmed via its Facebook account that the Android Ice Cream Sandwich will invade its Optimus lineup, apparently to compete against Motorola, HTC and Samsung’s Android smartphone lineup.
A total of four high-end LG Android smartphones are included in the list. According to LG, they will add more smartphones next year but the company will still evaluate the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system to determine the new software’s capability to power the remaining mid-range and high-end devices and if the ICS will perfectly handle the devices’ functionality, features and performance.

The LG Optimus 3D, the Optimus 2X, Optimus Black and Optimus LTE are scheduled to receive the upgrade but no specific release date was mentioned. It is also worth mentioning that the US variants like the LG Thrill 4G (Optimus 3D), the LG Marquee (Black), and the T-Mobile G2X (Optimus 2X) are not included in the list.
LG is adding that other devices and the compatibility with the Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be announced later next month, so it looks like the US variants will take the next ICS upgrade listing.
The LG Optimus Black is powered by a 1GHz single-core CPU, while the Optimus 2X, Optimus LTE and Optimus 3D are “dual-core processor smartphones.”
Aside from the upgrades, LG is also expected to introduce a new smartphone with pre-installed Android Ice Cream Sandwich early next year that will compete against the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and other future ICS smartphones.
