Android and iOS still the hot operating systems, Windows Phone interest growing while Amazon’s tweaked Android OS also getting
According to the study presented by Appcelerator and IDC, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are still the top priorities of application developers. However, Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Amazon’s forked Android operating system continue to gain developers’ attention.
The data shows developers are “very interested” in developing apps for Apple’s iOS for smartphones and tablets with 91% for the iPhone and 88% for the iPad. Android’s smartphone solution receives 83% and the “pure” Android tablet share is 68%.
I mentioned the word “pure” because some companies can redesign the Android operating system, and one of the best examples is Amazon with its new “Kindle Fire” Android Gingerbread tablet.
According to Appcelerator and IDC, North America-based application developers are “very interested” to create applications for the Kindle Fire with 49%, while the Galaxy Tab grabbed the second spot with 48%. When it comes to worldwide developers interest, the Galaxy Tab is leading with 56% while the Kindle Fire sits in second spot with 43%. It is worth noting that the Kindle Fire is available in United States only.
Apparently, many developers are eyeing on the new Kindle Fire due to its price tag of $199, and the aggressive pricing may lead to more customers and more app buyers. Amazon is also offering its own Android application store which features top apps like Rovio’s Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and Fruit Ninja. The new Kindle Fire with 7-inch screen and dual-core processor will arrive this week.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s new operating system is also catching up with 38% of developers saying that they’re very interested. Aside from the growing developers attention, IDC and Appcelerator also said that Windows Phone has overtaken Research in Motion’s platform, the BlackBerry. However, Microsoft’s mobile developers share is still low compared to the company’s rivals.
Microsoft’s new platform is expected to gain more in Europe, Asia and US courtesy of the company’s new partner, Nokia, but Apple and Google are expected to aggressively compete with Google’s new Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and Apple’s new and most popular phone to date (according to Apple), the iPhone 4S.
