Many tech sites have covered the so-called “compromised” Face Unlock feature found by a Malaysian tester who discovered that a static photo can trick the new facial recognition software feature of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the operating system used by the new Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus.
, a tech blogger, has filmed and demonstrated it three times using his photo saved in a Samsung Galaxy Note with Super AMOLED HD. The video was uploaded in Youtube, see it below.
Apparently, he successfully unlocked the device, so it looks like the new Android software feature can also scan digital photos aside from human flesh. Is this a disadvantage? Well, not really.
Android also supports PIN lock and the “pattern lock” so it is much secure to use the traditional ways than relying on Android’s new innovation. The Face Unlock feature is obviously a novelty (like Apple’s Siri) and arguably not a game changing “to die for” feature, so take this new discovery as a positive warning.
Android fans commented on the new discovery and according to the top comment (the comment being promoted by majority of viewers), Android’s Face Unlock “is a convenience feature” and “meant for people who don’t even use a lock feature.” The commenter named wicked4u2c added, “If you want your phone to be secured use a pattern plain and simple. I highly doubt if you lost your phone the person finding it will have a picture of you. So you haters go ask Siri why your phone still rocks a small 3.5 screen.”
Another top post is from a viewer named rifqixt who said that the video “proves that the super AMOLED is excellent,” referring to the Samsung Galaxy Note’s Super AMOLED HD screen. Super AMOLED is Samsung’s own display technology which uses specific type of a thin-film display technology “in which organic compounds form the electroluminescent material, and active matrix refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels.”
The Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich device, and other devices that will use the Ice Cream Sandwich are expected to offer the Face Unlock software too. Motorola, HTC and LG are expected to release their own Android ICS phones early next year and they’re also scheduled to update their current compatible devices.
According to rumors, the Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus will arrive in US starting this month sporting the Verizon Wireless Long Term Evolution Technology, while other countries like in Europe and Asia are expected to receive the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus model.
