Kobo unveils its device that will compete against Amazon and Barnes & Noble’s cheap Android tablets.
Less than two weeks before the Black Friday, e-Book company Kobo has unveiled its cheaper electronic reader that will compete against Amazon’s new Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble’s Nook Tablet — the advertising-supported Kobo Touch with Offers. However, the device will not arrive this week.
Similar to Amazon’s cheaper e-ink Kindles, the Kobo Touch is sporting the cheaper tag price of $99.99 due to its ad-supported ecosystem. Kobo Touch “with Offers” is an electronic ink screen e-reader that will arrive in the US this month. According to Kobo’s product page, they will start shipping the new ad-supported e-reader in 2 to 3 weeks.
According to Kobo, the Kobo Touch with Offers will display “sponsored screens and valuable offers” if the device is in sleep mode or turned off and also while a user is reading a book. The Toronto-based company has added that ads while on a book session will display “outside of the reading experience, like on the bottom of your home screen.”
Apparently, Amazon and Barnes and Noble are shifting away from e-inks with the companies’ new devices running Google’s popular mobile platform, Android. Amazon will begin shipping the new Kindle Fire this week while the Nook Tablet will also arrive this week.
Aside from the tweaked Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system, Amazon and B&N’s tablets are also powered by Texas Instruments CPU, the same processor used by high-end Android devices.
