Sony starts selling the Playstation Vita in Japan. Specs wise, it is a gaming device that will compete against the iPhone and other popular Android devices.
Sony said before the release of the PS Vita or the Playstation Vita device that it will try to lure the consumers away from smartphones that can also offer gaming apps.
According to Sony’s director of hardware marketing John Koller, the consumer electronics company’s quantitative and qualitative research has proven that consumers want “deeper, richer, console-type experiences,” and the smartphones or tablets do not offer that. Koller said smartphones and tablets owners will “come over to” Playstation Vita because they want a more robust gaming experience (and not Angry Birds?).
Sony in Japan has started selling the PS Vita, and here’s the good news for the company, thousands of game addicts lined up like iPhone 4S buyers just to buy the device first.
Apparently, it is too early to predict if the PS Vita is a huge success, or it will replicate the sales of the Nintendo 3DS which suffered from massive price drop just to attract more customers.
After Japan, Sony is expected to retail the Playstation Vita in United States and Europe starting February 2012. According to Sony Computer Entertainment, the WiFi-only PS Vita is priced at US$249, while the WiFi+3G is sporting the US$299 price tag.
Meanwhile, One Sony PS Vita buyer has filmed his unboxing, and compared the device from the older Playstation Portable, a Playstation 3 controller and the Nintendo’s 3DS.
According to YouTube user skyghene22, the PS Vita is better than the 3DS because the Sony console offers a larger screen, and the device is thinner. See his video below this post.
Multiple surveys and research have indicated that the demand for smartphones and tablet computers is increasing, largely due to the fact that Apple and Google are competitively offering new and exciting features every quarter.
The latest from Google, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with 4G LTE, is now available in United States via Verizon Wireless, while Apple’s new iPhone 4S is now available in more than 50 countries.
