A new rumor is claiming that Apple is preparing to launch an LTE-flavored iPhone 4S bound for Verizon and Sprint.
A new rumor, first posted by Taiwan-based website DigiTimes, is claiming that Apple might introduce a new version of the iPhone 4S packed with the LTE technology, or for starters, the Long Term Evolution data wireless technology capable of delivering faster internet speed, but also consumes more battery than the conventional 3G.
The report is suggesting that the device may land in United States early next year, and the source of the rumor are “industry sources.”
According to Digitimes, Apple and other smartphone manufacturers like Nokia, Research in Motion and Sony Ericsson are scheduled to join the LTE line up next year, while telecom providers all over the globe including United States, are also launching Long Term Evolution.
In United States, Verizon Wireless is already offering LTE, while AT&T is already testing its own in at least 5 key areas. Sprint Nextel is also expected to shift from WiMax to LTE until 2013. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint this year are the carriers that offer the iPhone.
The report doesn’t include information about the iPhone that will include the Long Term Evolution, but it is highly possible, only if the rumor is true, that it will be the iPhone 5 — the long rumored Apple smartphone that will feature new design and large screen.
This year’s iPhone, the iPhone 4S, looks exactly like the original iPhone 4 with 3.5-inch Retina screen, but was upgraded from single-core CPU to dual-core A5 CPU and the its primary camera, now an 8-megapixel that supports up to 1080p video recording @30fps.
It is worth noting that DigiTimes also predicted that this year’s iPhone will be a “slight upgrade” (the iPhone 4S) and will feature the same design, so its sources is quite believable – however, I suggest that we take this new rumor with a grain of salt.
