Google and Samsung finally unveil the new Galaxy Nexus, the phone formerly called as Nexus Prime.
Can the Galaxy Nexus compete against the iPhone 4S?
After weeks of waiting, Google and Samsung finally unveiled the brand new Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus, the 2011 Nexus device that will launch the brand new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
For starters, the new Galaxy Nexus is the first and possibly the only device that will include a stock Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, unless mobile manufacturers like HTC, Motorola, LG, etc are going to manufacture their own pure Android ICS handset or tablet.
Here are the features of the Galaxy Nexus that you need to know.
Outside USA, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is capable of connecting to the internet via HSPA+, and it is worth noting that this mobile technology is more common in Europe and Asia. Galaxy Nexus specs page claims the phone has a theoretical download speed of 21Mbps download.
No word yet on AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint variants of the Galaxy Nexus, but the specs sheet claims the new smartphone supports 850/900/1700/1900/2100 3G bands.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and fast OS update
Possibly the best feature of a Nexus device is its operating system support, and Galaxy Nexus is the first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. Apparently, Galaxy Nexus will get the latest and greatest features of Android faster than other devices.
Unlike previous Nexus devices like the Nexus S and the Nexus One, the Galaxy Nexus includes top of the line features and Ice Cream Sandwich is arguably the best-looking Android OS update ever when it comes to user interface design and out of the box features.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Android 4.0 alone is a beautiful operating system that doesn’t need “custom UIs” like HTC Sense, Motorola’s skin formerly called “MotoBlur” or even Samsung’s TouchWiz.
5 Megapixel Primary Camera and 1.3 Megapixel front-facing camera
Rumors are true, the Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus is equipped with 5-megapixel optimized camera with zero shutter lag. Google and Samsung demonstrated the camera during the Galaxy Nexus event, and it is obviously the fastest in the market now. The phone can also shoot 1080p video.
Google’s new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system also features new camera application with own panorama support, and built-in photo and video editing applications. The front-facing camera supports video calling or the new feature of Android 4.0 called Face detection.
People Application
Google said during the event that the new Android 4.0 focuses on design and people, and the new People App is one of the highlights of the redesign. The People application features “Contacts Card,” where user can store all information about his friend/s like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google+. Google said developers can get access to the People App’s API so third-party social networking or other apps can take advantage of the new feature too.
Super AMOLED HD screen
A large Super AMOLED HD screen is one of the best features of the new Galaxy Nexus. A stunning 4.65-inch screen with the resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, or 316ppi. For starters, the Galaxy Nexus can obviously compete against the iPhone 4S when it comes to screen resolution because the iPhone 4/iPhone 4S’s “Retina” screen feature 326ppi on a 3.5-inch screen, a very close competition, but Galaxy Nexus features a larger screen size, which is better for web browsing and watching videos.
Samsung also implemented the “thin bezel” style increase the phone’s screen size and maintaining the portability of the device.
Apparently, the Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus will be the first true HD sAMOLED-equipped phone to arrive in United States.
First impression
The Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus is obviously the first and true big smartphone that can compete against Apple’s new iPhone 4S, it also shows that Android is not just about power, but also about beauty.
Windows Phone is also in big trouble because the Android 4.0 is obviously a big redesign that seriously challenges Microsoft’s “Metro” user interface. Apparently, Android is more powerful than Windows Phone when it comes to core features like Notification, Web Browsing and Multitasking.

Long Term Evolution or HSPA+
The new Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus is the first LTE Android 4.0 device, and also capable of delivering HSPA+ speed depending on services available in your region. For example, Verizon Wireless will offer the LTE Galaxy Nexus in United States with actual speed of up to 15Mbps download and 5 to 7 Mbps upload — the speed according to our own test, and will still depend on your area, or actual use.Outside USA, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is capable of connecting to the internet via HSPA+, and it is worth noting that this mobile technology is more common in Europe and Asia.
