With any new release of an Apple operating system, there are a legion of fanboys sniffing around the code, trying to suss out any new devices being referred to. The latest version of iOS is no exception.

This time, iOS 5 seems to suggest that a new version of Apple TV could be arriving soon. According to 9to5Mac, a line of code refers to “Apple TV 3,1″ in the file system. The site then speculates as to what a new Apple TV could bring — most importantly, the new A5 chip that powers the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, and, with that, the ability to stream 1080p HD videos at long last.

Such a move gibes with the other rumor floating around that Apple is working on adding movie streaming to its new iCloud service. The latest iOS 5 upgrade also gives Apple TV the ability to mirror content from another iOS device via AirPlay (particularly useful for game playing) and access to the new Photo Stream feature that syncs digital photos across iOS devices.

New Apple TV or not, the latest black box with the rounded corners is turning out to be more than just a “hobby,” as the company once led us to believe it was.
